Q: I underwent urinalysis testing four times in the last couple of months. Results from three tests show protein in my urine. My doctor referred me to a kidney specialist. What might my test results mean?

A:

The kidneys filter your blood and excrete waste and extra fluids into the urine. Each kidney contains microscopic filtering units. They separate the blood from what will eventually become the urine. Many things can alter the filtering units. This can lead to protein leaking into the urine.

Normally, there is such a small amount of protein in the urine that it is not detected by standard urine tests.

The appearance of protein in your urine is not normal. It should be investigated to determine why it is happening. Your kidney specialist will try to find out if there is any kidney damage or a risk for developing kidney damage in the future.
